Mission & Vision

Like everything we build in the HRELab, this mission statement is a living document that will grow and adapt as our team and goals evolve.
Mission
We aim to build effective assistive and rehabilitative robots that solve real clinical needs. We do this by:
- engaging our target users in all aspects of our research, from development through deployment;
- employing a multidisciplinary, platform-agnostic set of sensing, modeling, and algorithmic tools, drawn from both our own work and that of the greater scientific community;
- targeting problems we are best positioned to address based on our collective expertise and resources, and those of our collaborating clinicians and users; and
- disseminating our work to the community in open-source, accessible form to allow both other researchers and device users to expand on and benefit from it.
Vision
We are working toward a world where all individuals are empowered to freely engage with their environment, regardless of disability or impairment. Specifically, we envision a world in which:
- we understand all individuals’ capacity for rehabilitation, and everyone has the resources to achieve that rehabilitation; and
- all individuals, regardless of post-rehabilitation impairment level, are able to effectively, intuitively, and independently interact with the physical world through robotic assistive devices.
